Mike Fontaine is filmmaker and Special Effects Makeup Designer. At nine years old, Mike became a protégé of Dick Smith—the legendary makeup artist behind The Exorcist and The Godfather—who mentored him into adulthood.

Mike received an Oscar nomination for his work on Colin Farrell as the Penguin in The Batman and was the winner of the Emmy and Guild Award for HBO's The Penguin.

Most recently, Mike served as special effects makeup designer for the highly acclaimed films Sinners and Marty Supreme. On Sinners, Mike led a team of 26 artists to create over 80 effects and realize the dark vision of writer/ director Ryan Coogler. The work has been recognized with several nominations including an Astra and Critics Choice. On Marty Supreme, Mike worked closely with Timothee Chalamet to create the gritty acne scarred face that transformed him into the title character.

Mike's credits of over 50 films have earned Guild Award Wins and nominations and include other projects such as The Wolf of Wall Street and The Place Beyond the Pines. His latest film, October, will be released at the end of 2026 by A24.

As a writer/director, Mike continues to explore his fascination with genre storytelling and his passion for creating otherworldly characters. His short films have screened at dozens of international film festivals including Sitges, Telluride Horror, Screamfest, and Strasbourg
